The Pilgrimage

From the Atlantic swell of San Sebastián to the cathedral steps of Santiago de Compostela, this nine-day cinematic traverse across northern Spain will capture your heart.

Journey Details

For centuries, people have travelled west towards Santiago de Compostela in search of something — faith, adventure, solitude, a new beginning. We’ll follow our own line across northern Spain, borrowing the spirit of the Camino while leaving its well-trodden path behind, discovering quiet roads, remote villages and mountains along the way.

From the green hills of the Basque Country to the chestnut-covered roads of Galicia, this enine-day journey crosses northern Spain through a landscape of ever-changing horizons. This is a distinctly hilly traverse, where the road rarely settles for long — legendary ascents give way to unknown climbs, rolling ridgelines and hidden valleys, carrying us deep into the wild heart of northern Spain and towards the cathedral towers of Compostela.

Into the Unknown

There is something magical about traversing the northern coast of Spain — not simply because it takes you over some of the great passes of cycling history, but because of everything that lies between them.

It is a landscape of remarkable contrasts: Atlantic green giving way to rugged mountain ranges dotted by Spanish mountain towns, along roads few riders have ever heard of. From the Basque to Cantabria, Asturias to Galicia, there is a sense that we are discovering the land for ourselves.

That uncertainty is the allure — the feeling of moving through an immense, ever-changing landscape — never quite knowing what the next road will bring — that makes this journey so special.

Local Flavours

Along the way, our roadside feed stops will follow the character of the regions we ride through — from Basque pintxos, Idiazábal cheese and freshly baked bread to Cantabrian pastries and mountain cheeses, before discovering the rich flavours of Asturias and Galicia. Think crisp apples and local honey, Asturian cheeses and sweet treats, followed by Galician empanada, creamy Tetilla or San Simón cheese, almond cake and chestnut pastries as we draw closer to Santiago.

Carefully chosen from village bakeries, small producers and local cafés, each stop will offer something of the place we’ve just ridden through — simple, generous food that gives us another reason to slow down and savour the road.

For centuries, people have travelled west towards Santiago in search of something — faith, adventure, solitude, a new beginning. We found it all on these beautiful roads.

Route Details

We’ll leave San Sebastián behind and follow quiet roads through the Basque Country before crossing into Cantabria, where the mountains rise sharply above the coast. Here, we’ll take on the formidable Los Machucos before continuing west into Asturias and the dramatic landscapes of the Picos de Europa. The road then leads towards two of Asturias’ most iconic climbs — the legendary Alto de l’Angliru, before continuing towards the high lakes of Lagos de Covadonga.

From there, we descend to Oviedo for a well-deserved rest day before turning west once more, leaving the high mountains of Asturias behind as the road rolls into Galicia. Here, quiet lanes wind through ancient villages and deep green countryside, beneath a canopy of chestnut trees, carrying us ever closer to Santiago de Compostela.
